French getaway weekend – Peronne, France
19th May 2017 - 22nd May 2017
Get away from it all with your friends from the Morris Minor Club for a long weekend in Peronne, just South of Arras in France.
A weekend away which will be the first our club has arranged outside the UK. Driving down to Peronne would take an hour and a half from Calais if we rushed down the motorway (and paid the relevant toll) but being in the Morris Minor club we take double that time as we amble along the scenic route (free) and enjoy the traffic free roads. Travelling down on Friday May 19th we’ll stay in Peronne until Monday May 22nd. If you are hoping to travel with us please speak to Brian as soon as possible and let him know if you require accommodation or whether you plan to take your own along with you. Brian is in contact with our new member Antoine from Arras who is doing his best to negotiate a good deal for our members who wish to stay in a nearby hotel for the weekend. Antoine is also organising places to visit while we are there. It is important to let Brian know if you are planning to come so Antoine has an idea of numbers to expect. The Calais to Peronne distance would be around 100 miles which is less than the 135 miles we drove to Portsmouth when we went on the Isle Of Wight trip or the 160 miles we drove to Bournemouth. We just need to remember to drive on the wrong side of the road!
Antoine has negotiated a deal for us with the local hotel, rooms are 60 Euros per night plus 8 Euros per person for breakfast, a total of 228 Euros per couple for the three nights (about £194). The ferry fare would be about £83 return.
On Saturday morning we plan to visit the Castle Museum in the city (9 Euros) then have lunch in the local brewery ‘Albert’. In the afternoon we’ll visit the Epic Museum Of Aviation and Industry – don’t miss it! The day will be rounded off with dinner at Antoine’s Bistro in Peronne which includes wine for 25 Euros per person.
Sunday morning there will be an optional drive on the open roads followed by a BBQ by the lake and then a boat ride, all at Catherine’s place in Peronne. The price for the BBQ (including drinks) would be 18 Euros. The rest of the afternoon we would be free to explore the area.
We will be supplied with leaflets (in English) by the local Tourist Information Office to show us other interesting places in the area should we want to visit them.
There is also an opportunity to extend your holiday in France if you don’t need to travel home on the Monday by joining those of us who plan to visit France for an extra two weeks – the annual MMOC holiday known as Minors On Tour (MOT). The MOT for 2017 is at St Cast Le Guildo which is about 20 minutes from St Malo in Normandy. This year the MOT starts the weekend after our trip to Peronne and runs Sat 27th May until Sat 3rd June so we’ll head there a little early (stopping overnight on the way) before arriving on Weds 24th May. Those of us going are planning to stay in France until Tuesday June 6th when we’ll drive back to Calais. Although the MOT means staying at a campsite there is also on site accommodation available if you book early enough. Check out their website for more information. www.minorsontour.org.uk Brian has some entry forms for the MOT. Please call him on his mobile 07880 738147 for more info.
